Scott Bader to Present Methacrylate-based Adhesives for Rails at InnoTrans Published on 2016-09-06. Author : SpecialChem
InnoTrans 2016 Scott Bader is exhibiting at InnoTrans 2016 from 20-23 September at Messe Berlin (Hall 8.2/ Stand 318). The InnoTrans exhibition, one of the world’s largest trade fairs for rail transport technology, covers five key segments: Railway technology; Railway infrastructure; Public transport; interiors; Tunnel construction.
Latest Composites Materials & Adhesives
On its stand in hall 8.2, the area focused on Rail Technology materials, Scott Bader will be exhibiting its range of methacrylate based primerless structural adhesives for use in the rail sector, originally developed for automotive and mass transport applications to bond metals, plastics and composite substrates. It will also be showcasing its range of high performance advanced composite resins and gelcoats, developed to meet the demanding mechanical and fire performance test standards in the passenger rail industry for rolling stock and infrastructure composite materials.
At InnoTrans visitors will find:
The extended range of 10:1 and 1:1 ratio Crestabond® primerless MMA structural adhesives with new black grades for carbon fiber applications
The latest range of urethane acrylate-based high performance Crestapol® acrylic laminating resins, with grade options that can be mixed with aluminium trihydrate (ATH) to produce fire, smoke and toxic fumes (FST) rated carbon
A range of halogen free, low surface spread fire retardant (FR) hand and spray applied Crystic® Fireguard gelcoats and intumescent topcoats
Glass fiber reinforced composite parts by hand lay-up, vacuum infusion closed moulding or pultrusion processes
High Productivity Structural Adhesives
The Scott Bader stand will have the latest expanded range of Crestabond® MMA structural adhesives, suitable for bonding a wide range of popular engineering material substrates including: carbon and glass fibre reinforced composites, stainless steel, aluminum, cold rolled and galvanized metals, ABS, acrylic and polycarbonate. All Crestabond products provide:
Excellent adhesion strength
Toughness
Fatigue
Impact resistance
Advantages of Crestabond Range
It offers a choice of eight grades, with both 10:1 and 1:1 mix ratio options, and a range of fixture times, from as little as 8 minutes for the new rapid bond M1-04 grade, up to as long as 240 minutes for M1-90.
Combination of a fast cure with the freedom to bond such a wide variety of different substrates with virtually no need to do any pre-application surface preparation or apply a primer, offering many manufacturers significant cost savings and productivity benefits for assembly.

Advanced FST Performance FRP Systems
Scott Bader has developed and supplied fire retardant (FR) thermoset resins and gelcoats for composites applications to the rail sector for over 35 years. Using the latest technology advanced materials, both glass and carbon-fibre gelcoated and colour matched FRP composite parts can be cost effectively fabricated using an ATH filled Crestapol® resin grade with one of the Crystic®Fireguard FR gelcoats, including new ‘halogen free’ grades. The Crestapol 1212, 1214, 1216 and 1250LV resin grade options available can be heavily filled with ATH depending on the FR specification required for a specific application. Matched laminate systems can be specified for a wide variety of both interior and exterior rolling stock and infrastructure applications that must pass stringent fire, smoke and toxicity (FST) standards, including the latest EN 45545 rail standard; independent test results have given an EN 45545 HL2 pass rating to various glass fibre laminate matched system using both hand lay-up and infusion ATH-filled Crestapol resin grades in combination with Crystic® Fireguard 70PA high performance FR gelcoat.
Prior to the EN 45545 regulation, Crestapol-based FRP rail parts met various International FST rail approvals for station buildings, rolling stock and underground trains including: DIN 5510 S4/SR2/ST2; French Epiradeateur NFP 92-501-M1 and NFF 16-101-F0; and the Spanish M1/F0 fire resistance test for interior rail applications.
Intumescent FR Topcoats
For certain interior application areas needing a fire spread delay barrier, such as electrical enclosures, floor sections and roof panels, Scott Bader’s Crystic® Fireguard 75PA ‘Excel’ intumescent topcoat is added to the internal side of an FRP laminate. This intumescent FR topcoat can withstand a direct flame at a temperature of 700 degrees C (1292 degrees F) for over 60 minutes without the laminate catching fire; and when used behind Crestapol® 1212 the laminate system passes BS 476 Part 7 Class 1, Part 6, Class 0, and M1 F1. 2
Global Rail Applications
Crestapol resins have established a global reputation with many leading manufacturers in the rail sector as a viable alternative to more traditional phenolic resins, providing more dimensionally stable parts with an excellent surface finish, plus superior mechanical performance in terms of shear strength, toughness and fatigue resistance. Many convertors and OEMs have found Crestapol resins to be much easier to process, offering improved productivity cost benefits as well as being preferable to use on the shop floor, being a more EHS (environmental, health & safety) friendly resin chemistry.
Over the last eight years, Scott Bader has significantly expanded its worldwide customer base, which includes international train manufacturing companies such as Alstom, Siemens and Bombardier. New rail, vehicle and infrastructure applications using different grades of Crestabond primer-less structural adhesives and Crestapol resins have been developed in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America and key Asian markets, particularly in China.
