     Sasol Presents at China Hot Melt Adhesives Forum 2018 in Ningbo

    Sasol will present two presentations at the upcoming China Hot Melt Adhesives Forum in Ningbo about the impact of waxes on HMA rheology and the importance of wax choice in new polyolefin-based packaging adhesives.

     Rheological Effect of Waxes

    Johan de Jonge, Global Market Development Manager Adhesives, will present on March, 21st the rheological effect of waxes in packaging hot melt adhesives “Rheology of packaging hot melt adhesives and the use of waxes as rheology modifiers”. 

    Rheology is a powerful technique that formulators use to gain better understanding of how formulation changes will affect hot melt adhesive performance. Waxes have strong rheological effects in these adhesives, with FT wax being particularly potent. Sasol will present an introduction to rheology of hot melt adhesives, discussing some of the basic principles and focusing on the main technologies used in the packaging market today. The impact of wax changes on the rheology will be linked to effects seen in the adhesive performance, allowing more efficient formulation.

     Choice of Base Polymer for Hot Melt Adhesives

   On March, 22nd Johan will also present “Don’t get stuck with old HMA technologies – 21st century polymers and the role of wax”. Choice of base polymer for hot melt adhesives is rapidly expanding as new polyolefins enter the market that offer cost or performance advantages such as mileage improvement, stability of supply, or lower application temperatures. Waxes remain key components in new packaging adhesives based on these polymers. Critically, the choice of wax is all important, with Fischer Tropsch waxes out-performing others. This has been demonstrated in laboratory performance testing, analysis of structure-property relationships and during application trials. Sasol has identified specific wax types that work best for each market segment. Further data including performance test results and DSC will be presented in the full paper explaining how the wax-polymer combination is selected.
